 Anyone repair a R4 compressor ?
« Thread Started on May 17, 2007, 12:04am »

Has anyone on here replaced the clutch on our R4 Harrison compressors? My dad's A/C is freaking cold but the compressor clutch is slipping and the noise is driving me crazy, i dont want it to seize up while its like 95 degress out there. I just vacuumed the entire A/C system, filled it with proper oil and R134a. The compressor doesnt make much noise, so i think its just the clutch.

I hear you can rent a puller tool and remove it that way, but i wonder if you can do it on car. I never done one of these before, but i figure it would probably be cheaper than buying a new one.

Dude i tried to remove the pulley from one and had no luck, does it have the regular v-belt or the serp belt. if it is the v belt i have a compressor you could use. the feild coil is prolly breaking down when it warms up.

Its a V belt setup, you can see the compressor clutch slip sometimes when its on, it just stops spinning then reengages.

I keep turning it off and on, and if that doesnt work i get the car moving and try to turn it on then, and usually it will stop making the twisted nipple squeal. When its running, sometimes it will give of an intermittent chirp.

Bringing this one back from the dead. I want to try to replace the front bearing on my R4 in my IROC because its really noisy.

I been looking at the Clutch Plate Remover/Installers and they all say pre-1980 R4 compressors that do not have metric threads. Are the threads on our third gens metric?
