I have a 305 TPI motor, i think not sure but the original was TBI and i swapped it so i'm going with guttural instinct since the rest of the car has been iffy in the sense that some stuff is for 5.7 and also 5.0. Anyways, my shop teacher has an older 350 bored .30 over from a 78 corvette and everywhere i look for engine informatin on IROC's like mine it never says anything on compatibility. I was wondering, can i get a set of heads for this older motor and slap on the TPI and be ok or do i need a new block. Also i'm installing a 5 speed from hawksthirdgenparts and was wondering if this older block and the transmission will be compatible i know the t-5's are known for getting tore up from monstrous 350ci engines but i've seen lots of those aftermarket setups. Any insight on this matter will be greatly appreciated, besides it's not everyday you get on the computer and a 17 year old is asking questions on how the best way to sweeten up his 3rd gen would be. ;D thanks for any help you guys can offer. Mick

You can swap out the heads with an older casting if you have an 86 or older intake, on 87 and up the intake bolts on the center go in at a different angle, another way to tell is if it has the center bolt valve covers (87 and up)or permiter bolt valve covers.(86 and down)
Even then you could find the older intake on ebay if you don't have one.
The only trouble you will have with the older block will be the fly wheel and the pilot bearing.

The 5.7L and 5.0L TPI engines are essentially the same engines, the intake manifolds, runners, and fuel rails are the same. The main difference between the two engines is the bore size: 305 engines have a smaller 3.75" bore and the 350s have a 4" bore.
The stroke of the crankshafts are the same, the 305 engine is essentially a stroked 289 (if memory serves) with a 350 crankshaft.
The injectors are different, as well as the engine's appetite for fuel and air, but essentially they are big brother and little brother.
The 350 that came out in 1987 is a roller camshaft engine, which has roller rockers, lifters and camshaft with centerbolt valve covers. Its a little bit different from the older engines.
You need to provide a little more information on what engine you have and if you plan on swapping that engine out so we can make a recommendation.
I'm not really sure what your question is, are you wanting to take an older set of heads and put it on your 305? (Like take the 350 heads and put them on the 305) Or are you wanting to swap the entire 78 engine into your camaro?
T-5's were really not meant for a whole lot of power, and i hope the T-5 you bought was a World Class one. Originally, i think the T-5 was never meant for a V8 but that it was compact and easily adaptable to many applications so they but it behind the small V8 at the time. According to moderndriveline.com "Torque rates vary from 240ft/lbs to as high a ~500ft/lbs with aftermarket race gears. The strongest factory T-5 is known as a T-5z at 330ft/lbs. Several things can be done to improve this rating."
I have heard both good and bad about the T-5's, some people run them hard and hardly break them. Some people have problems eventually and have to rebuild them. It all depends on how hard you run the car.
One of the other members may be able to answer your question about the engine swap a little better once we know what you want to do.

Thanks guys the main idea is to take the older engine completely, throw it in my car and use my orginal heads from my engine as of now to make it compatible with tpi, the tuned port is from an 88 vette or firebired, all i remember is i took it from a scrapyard and the car was rolled and twisted so al i wanted was the tpi. AS for the t-5 it's just a used kit from Hawk's it states that they're jsut factory set ups with all the complete parts to throw in your car from automatic to five speed.

Being that I have officially screwed 3 t-5's I wouldn't put to much power behind it. If you have bad tires the tranny will last longer, but if you take off hard and the tires grab you can very easily destroy it. I still have a t-5 in my car, but my next step is a t-56. The t-56's have more up sides than down. They can take more power, and you get better highway gas mileage. It should last you if you don't drive like ram and I do, But you also have to figure you don't know how who ever had that tranny before you drove....... if you need help with the set up let us know.
