My CS130 alternator on my IROC hasnt been charging that great so I decided to swap in the CS144 140 amp I had sitting here on my shelf. I was going to just do a test fit to see if it would fit, but after going to buy a belt I decided to have it tested. I took the CS130 to advance and they found that the bearing was bad and the diodes were toast. Here is the stock CS130 Alternator Bracket: Test fitting of the early style TPI alternator bracket: Moving the air valve out of the way: I had to install bottom bolt and spacer (from SI alt) first: Then I installed the upper bracket to manifold and water pump: Final fitting, air valves wont fit back on bracket: Buttoned up, tightened and air valves reconnected: Cleaned up engine bay: The stock CS130 alternator plug and the CS144 alternator plug were the same, so all I had to do is plug it in and go. I did have to enlarge the hole on the charging cable so it would fit the stud on the back of the case. This was a little more difficult to do than on my 86 because the brackets were designed for the smaller CS130 alternator and the cases of the SI alternators and CS144 alternators are basically the same size and have the same bolt spacing, making it a straightforward swap. Getting the TPI bracket from an early model camaro and having a SI spacer in hand beforehand is a must, as well as having the right belt for your pulley setup.

I am going to upgrade my dads dinky 78amp to a CS144 140 amp. I found out yesterday that NAPA sells the conversion harness with the integrated resistor for $17.49 part number EC82. They ordered it and I picked it up today.
Will post pictures when I actually pull the alternator off and start doing the work.

Its really easy to swap the CS144 into the early style TPI cars. The upper bracket for an 86 is perfect and you dont really have to change anything. I had to get some different bolts for the upper mounting and get a rear alternator spacer from a mid 80s caprice and slapped it in there.
On my 87 TPI, I had to swap out the tiny CS-130 bracket for an 86 style upper TPI bracket and i didnt need a conversion harness.
On a Carb 86, the upper bracket is very similar to the full size truck bracket and seems to be much smaller. I tried to put washers underneath the bolt eye that bolts up to the intake manifold but its still too small. I reread the thread on thirdgen.org and another guy just left that bolt out and only tightened the bolt by the water pump. The caprice spacer seems to be too long to fit in there nicely, so I may reuse the original spacer because its slightly shorter.
I quit messing with it earlier because it was way too hot to be out sweating on the car.
