I have a set of Crane 1.6 ratio rocker arms that I want to put on my IROC, and I am wondering how much trouble it is to install them.
I have heard that you have to enlarge the pushrod holes or that you have to clearance them so they dont damage the valve guides and seals.
They are going on a stock 305 that possibly has a cam in it but dont know what its got.
At the same time, I was thinking of doing the valve seals because I get a puff of smoke when I start it up and she burns a good shot of oil. Its pretty embarrassing when the cloud hits the neighbors that are chilling out on the front porch.
I dont know how to do it, but I watched a video on youtube and it doesnt seem that hard if you have an air compressor (which i dont anymore).
I been wanting to do this for awhile now, and getting tire of seeing the parts on the shelf.
Anyone have recommendations on valve seals to get? I have been looking at the umbrella type that are supposed to seal better.

the viton seals are best, any machine shop could get them. Did you check your geometry or go with shorter pushrods?

I've read conflicting things about the geometry, and wouldnt know how to check it myself. It would be nice if we could you know, all meet up and talk shop.

I'm not sure what you've read that conflicts, unless your aiming towards coil bind. As a personal rule of thumb, I wouldn't go over a .480 lift on stock LO3 or L31 heads. I have heard of guys going as high as .510(on LO5 & L31's) - but personally would rather have more duration and place less abuse on the valve train.
as for installing the 1.6 rockers, an adjustable pushrod will come in handy.

Some people say that you have to enlarge the pushrod holes, some say you dont. These are stock LB9 heads and I've been told if you are going to go over .450 lift that you need guide plates. This is from an engine rebuilder that did the other LB9 in my yellow Z.
I just want a little bump, nothing too wild. The stupid 2.73 gears have absolutely got to go though.

I don't enlarge the pushrod holes, but I do clean them and make sure there aren't any obstructions. I haven't seen the LB9 heads, but they either have self aligning rockers or built in guide plates. With a mild cam, it isn't necessary. It becomes vital when changing valve springs.
The debate on having the heads machined for screw in studs will all boil down to cam size and spring pressure needed for cam.
