Completely new to this, but...what are the combined purple & yellow wires(10gauge) under the dash for? The connector became unconnected from ?somewhere? Now when I turn the key, I get nothing on the dash, much less the car starting. 87 firebird, V8, 5.7L. Thought it was the ignition switch, changed that, but still nothing. As I was changing it, that's when I noticed the purple & yellow wires. Not a car guy, but mechanically inclined, & will become a car guy to get this bad boy working.

Can you take a picture of the wires you are talking about?
There is a 10 gauge wire that supplies power to the ignition/starter underneath the dash.
I will look at my schematic and tell you if I can figure out which wire you are talking about.
Year of the car?

Will do; and the year is 1987 firebird. And what are the chances that the new ignition switch I put in is also defective, 'cause next I'm going to check if one of my wires in the harness to the switch is hot.

Ok, stupid camera broke & don't have picture phone, so...let's say I'll just skip that for now; I can see the rod moving the ignition switch to it's proper position in relation to the key position, but I still get nothing. Is it possible the key cylinder is bad? I took it out & it seems solid, nothing bent, broke, worn; but that doesn't mean it's not. If I manually move the ignition switch myself(carefully, of course), and still nothing happens, what else could it be?

Check it out, I was tiger-chasing the purple-yellow wire I asked out about, when this black box, labeled Goodwrench Security System, kinda fell down from under the dash. I could see the leads connected to it from the numeric pad on the console, & some leads leading to an additional smaller box(with a little turn knob on it)that also said security system. Whoever had it before me put a switch under the dash that activated the security; I guess to bypass by the numeric pad. So I guess it does appear to have been activated; I guess my knee got it, or I stretched my leg or something. It would make sense as to why I'm not getting anything, ANYTHING, when I turn the key. So how do I fix this?

That is a GM add on Security System. That kills the starter apparently. When I had the ignition switch with the connectors plugged in and all the rods attached and I manually turn the rod to make the ignition switch go to the run position, my car started right up. Ok, at a loss.... respliced 10gauge yellow wire (which was spliced going into security system) under the dash, & I still get nothing when I turn the key. Hypothetically, what becomes dis-engaged if the security system is accidentally engaged WHILE driving. Either way, I'm getting nothing. I disconnected all the wires going to the security system. What next?
