I have parts under lifetime warranty with both places.
Advance - I called them to check on a power steering pump I had under warranty there and they stated that its no longer on file because they purge the warranty after a couple years (amount of years varied on who I asked). My entire front suspension is TRW from Advance on my 86 and I am really upset about this. The receipts that they print wipe off or fade very quickly and I didnt think to scan or copy them at the time. The salesperson that I spoke with said not to worry, they keep the records. Yeah, right.
Autozone - A lot of parts that I bought under lifetime warranty are coming up NLA. The Performance Friction Carbon Metallic brake pads I bought from them can no longer be sourced. They ended up giving me my money back. The Morse Loaded Calipers with brake pads that I bought from them are also NLA. When I need to replace them, I am going to probably have to get my money back again. They seem to be better at keeping records but a lot of stuff is disappearing off their system and their receipts are equally atrocious.
O'reillys - They seem to be the best at keeping warranty information in their system. Their receipts are printed on a dot matrix printer on real paper so they seem to last a lot longer. They price match the competitors and I have started buying my parts from them.
I have noticed that the days of going into a store and buying a part that is in stock is almost over. I usually have to wait at least a day or a couple days for them to get the part to the store.
