My 700R4 sometimes shifts erratically, a little early and a little late in 2nd gear. Im thinking its the detent (tv cable) and i have it pushed in all the way. Once and awhile when its relatively cold, and i punch it to go into passing gear on the highway, it will stick in neutral (supposed to be in 2nd or 3rd) and then finally i hear this loud clunk and all of a sudden it shifts HARD into 3rd gear and takes off.

Something I found on this: 1. Disengage snap lock on detent cable. 2. Place carburetor lever in wide open throttle (W.O.T.) position (make sure lever is against W.O.T. stop) On vehicles equipped with Quadrajet carburetors, disengage the secondary lockout before placing lever in W.O.T position. NOTE: (DETENT cable must be through detent) 3. With carburetor lever in W.O.T. position, push snap lock on detent cable downwards until top is flush with cable.

It appears i was running it 2 quarts low on fluid. I filled her up while it was on a level surface and made sure it was hot already.
It either shifts way too early or way late now. I pushed the tab in and pushed the cable in all the way, then i ratcheted the cable out by engaging the throttle all the way to the stop. I did this twice and it still will not shift properly.
Its getting stuck in first gear and shifts to second and then shifts back to 1st and then back to second. When i stop sometimes it shifts to first after i have stopped the car, and the tranny sometimes lurches when im sitting stationary at a light.
Do you think its an internal tranny problem or do i just need a new detent cable?
I am thinking of buying a core from the junkyard and asking anyone here if they can rebuild it. I will help of course, but i dont know what im doing.

With the symptoms i found supporting evidence that it might be the governor. When accelerating, it takes off in 2nd or 3rd gear, and then downshifts really hard into first and rockets off.
In first it will rev up really high and gets stuck and finally shifts up to 2nd gear when you let up on the gas. Same thing in 3rd gear, and only gets into overdrive on the highway after you hit 45 mph.
I lowered the transmission by removing the crossmember and lowered it with a jack with a board on it.
The governor cover is at the tailshaft of the tranny and has a cover over it, much like a dust cover. I removed it with a set of flat screw drivers and caught quarts of the fluid that came out.
The governor comes out by twisting it and pulling it out.
The governor gear is seized up and the valve is stuck, it wont turn. The springs are kind of weak but i dont know if they are worn out yet. The governor is like a speedo and controls the upshifts points.
Detent is only part of the equation, at WOT the governor makes sure the tranny upshifts at certain points to avoid burning up the tranny. I am going to go get a new or rebuilt one tomorrow.
Does anyone know about the 700R4? I am kind of worried that the seized valve broke something inside the transmission, because the gear is seized but not stripped...

Hey man the gear on the governor will not turn cause it has a pin that holds it on, If any thing had seized it would have striped the gear.

Thomas
I pulled the governor out and took it to Nogalitos Gear and gave it to the guy there to look at. He played with the weights and looked at the valve and said "yep that thing is seized"
Then i asked if they have new ones and the stock 700R4 governors are $20 something and the corvette governors are $25 with tax. I bought the corvette 700R4 governor.
I played with the weights and you can see the valve go up and down inside the governor assembly on the new governor. On the old one, the valve is stuck up against the gear inside. BTW the gear on the end looked brand new, not a knick on it.
I am going to finish draining the fluid out and try to filter and gasket again. I really hate doing it, its not fun.
I just hope that something else has not seized or gotten stripped inside the tailhousing, that would suck.

Jim and I worked on the car today, we dropped the tranny and drained all the fluid out and changed the filter. I cleaned the pan off with intake cleaner and made sure the magnet was clean.
I dont know how the guys that pull the governor out say that no fluid comes out, half the fluid came out through the tailhousing when i pulled the governor cover off.
We put a new gasket on the pan and reattached everything. The governor went in with a simple twist, that was the easiest part. If you pull the governor do not forget to install a new governor cover gasket.

We also made a huge improvement on the way my car runs. My 'Service Engine Soon' light still comes on but that may be due to my low oil(oops) or my timing just a tid bit off. Resetting the ECM helped quite a bit.
P.S. Brian I owe you $...forgot to give you your change back from the Valero.

I finally drove the car, its still not shifting right, its way to aggressive. Takes off like a race car, the tranny guy says the detent cable has a governor or something that probably is stuck and to yank on the cable really hard with it disconnected from the throttle body.
Going to give her a yank...lol
