I can't get my rockers to stop tapping. At least I think thats what is making the noise. Is there anything else that it could be? Is anyone willing to come help me with the damn thing? It would be really awesome is someone could just come check it out and give me their opinion. Let me know guys, thanks

How are you adjusting your valvelash.

Spin the pushrod while tightening until you feel resistance then tighten another 3/4 turn. Following the exhaust valve open-set intake, intake valve closed-set exhaust rule.

Sounds like you are on the right track. I use the same method but go 1/4 turn on my 84 less chance of a lifter pumping up and floating a valve and 1/2 on my 89. what grade fuel are you running.

I usually run 93 octane. Think thats too high for the 9.6:1 compression I'm running? Something I was concerned about-when I turn the motor over by hand I can hear a hissing sound. I'm not sure what stroke its on when it does it, but it has me concerned that I have a leak in the head gasket or something. Or is that normal?

I highly doubt that's normal unless you have a spark plug removed. Please correct me if I am wrong but with a 9.6:1 motor you don't need to be running the best. I think 89 would do and save you some cash in the process!

Where are you hearing the hissing from. intake, valve cover area. If its from the intake you have a leaking intake valve from the valve cover is normal leakage past the rings. Are you running a pcv valve or just breathers.

It sounds like its getting past the rings. I comes from deeper down in the motor than the valves. So thats good news at least. I'm running a pcv valve on one side with a rubber plug on the other. I only run the high octane when I take it to the strip so it doesn't detonate/ping. Sometimes the 87 will do that under high loads or rpms.

Or is that normal? the hissing sound can be from a valve opening slowly on a compression stroke. I hear it all the time once valves are adjusted on a new engine. If you have concerns of a bhg or blow-by, do a compression check. Be sure to remove all coolant/water and leave radiator cap off.

I completely forgot about compression checks. I have two new gauges around here somewhere. Whats the correct procedure for that? I've seen about 5 different ways. Thanks for all the help guys. Its sure helpin me out.

Its sure helpin me out. I pull all the spark plugs, drain coolant, disconnect fuel line to pump(carb) and have a battery charger on your battery. Attach the gauge to each cylinder(one at a time), cranking engine 3-4 cycles. Write down what each cylinder pressure is. Adjacent cylinders should be within 5-10psi of each other.

Ok cool hopefully tomorrow I can do that. I wonder if I have enough header clearance to get the gauge in there...I probably do. Its a good thing I'm still running straight water in the cooling system. I'd be wasting a lot of coolant if I didn't. I've had to drain it a couple times now.

okay, just checking. the 817R are a high rev lifter and are known for making a clicking noise. They are quite annoying, but come in handy when revving past 6k.
