hey guys! well it seems that the summer is coming up soon and will be enjoying the summer break from school. which in that case gives me plenty of time to hopefully start my long saving project for my camaro. im pretty new in this city, and everyone i talk to are not into or not aware of car restoration in our generation. most of these yahoos are all about imports and all. well my goal is finding an engine (ls1). so my question to those who have been here for while. is there any recomendations for looking for specific engines in the city that might have an lsx somewhere. i heard of HP SALVAGE. this company gave me a price for a engine/tranny combo, sounds a little overpriced but its the only place i know or heard of that sells engines, LSx preffered and possibly install. have any of you guys looked at any junkyard places and seen some jewels out there? san antonio is pretty big and would like to know if any of you folks can share some places to look at.im sure this info will help out people to have some ideas where to go when the time comes.. i will also update you guys if i hear of some places that might be worthy... thanks everyone..

Yeah HP Salvage is out by me. I thought they were pretty overpriced too. Theres a guy on craigslist with a Stage 3 t56 for 1850 but the guy at hp salvage wants like 2 grand for a stock one. I got a bunch of my parts at Roosevelt U Pull It. That place is huge and they have decent prices. I got a new dash for 20 bucks! I'd start looking around there. I know theres a couple other yards around it too.

How much power do you want from the lsx? I have an lq9 block, intended for use to make a 408 stroker. Least hp I've ever heard out of that setup was 510hp & 530ft-lbs torque.

monkihead for now i am planning on upgrading to the more popular lsx swap to the thirdgens. power will come later. my maing goal is around 500+ and i know that trickflow sells a nice set to give you that much. but it's at least 3 grand.. i guess that's how much hp is worth when you move up those numbers i guess. and to top it off with a nice supercharger! man guess im asking too much!
as far as junkjards are concerned, there are no ls1-3 engines except the suvs and 5.3 engines out there. i know there is a supercharger for those engines pushing around 400+ hp. i've never met anyone putting in a 5.3 engine in a camaro. just wondering if there are actually worth the money.
out of curiousity, i wonder what type of engines are used for chevy trucks like silverado's. do they still have the same engines as suv's?

i also forgot to mention thati've been into a salvage yard in the i-10 in the south east part of the city (4got the name of the place but it was a colision center and had a junkyard.. maybe someone has been there), and like i've said before, nothing but suvs and imports.. mainly the daily things you see on highways, man is the ls1-2 more harder to find now that they became more popular? i still haven't seen a nice 3rd gen out there. or i might be in the wrong part of town. im up at the northwest part of the city. in all i'm still looking for that junkyard heaven we all look so desperately for. nowadays our cars are getting more and more harder to find. if we do they are either bone dry and in the junkyard for decades or people still drive them. plus it's not worth buying a perfectly good used 98-02 ss camaro to gut it out, that CRAZY! who would do that!
im just thinking is the prices to get this swap more expensive than it was before it got popular? i've read message boards a few years ago about guys getting a complete ls1 swap for a couple of grand. i am guessing between 4-6 grand is more realistic in today. IM STILL LOOKING!! and will let everyone know who is looking for the same swap as me about a good deal or so.. hopefully it's soon!! my main goal is to find 5.7 ltr. 6spd. complete. or close to it.

Yeah scour craigslist in Dallas, Houston and Corpus Christi.
Also, ask around at the junkyards, imports and domestics. Someone knows someone. I went to a junkyard right down the street from Monikhead, it was an import place and there was a corvette LS1 motor complete with harness just sitting there in the waiting area. I think he wanted $2500 for it. This was a couple years ago when my buddy had his Stealth.
The junkyard owners go to auctions and buy cars to part out. When we went out back he had a LT1 Firebird in the shop they were fixing... at an import junkyard.
Try these places, Assured Auto parts and Insurance Auto Salvage.

Your best bet would be to find a wrecked ta or z28 and strip it yourself because then you get everything you need to get it running. And it would also give you 4th gen interior parts to swap into your car. I had planned on a ls1 swap and was going to use the 4th gen cluster and fab a dash around it.

craiglist.. why didn't i think o that! i'll look into it.. i guess im wierded out on how many wierdo's are on that site.. id be scared to ask and get like some crazy answer like a hand job or something by some guy in a mullet.. lol.
lucid.. i asked around, but the ones i been on mentioned that they had camaros but with 6 cylinders.. i decided to try out tomorrow for some more places. and check craiglists..
since itsfriday and all the cars in san an are out in the highways, i'd decided to check online.
and mr camaro racer.. i can imagine how quick those cars would sell in auctions and all.
i had looked at ebay but its so hard to trust now-a-days.. unless its local and within distance. i seen some wierd posts about ls1 where there is one fr sale and in the picture the damn engine is in the cars.. isnt that suspicious to anyone? has anyone seen that c6 corette bone chasis without the shell.. wonder if that would work? as far as brakes, etc..

Look into the LQ4 or LQ9 engines. They are both LS based engines, just with an iron block. They can be bored out more than .010. You can always go back and do the 408 stroker kit and make an easy 500hp. www.gmhightechperformance.com/tech/lsx_engine/0909gmhtp_408_lq9_budget_engine_build/photo_40.html

z28 guy..really. man. im sure if you did, you would become my "connection" lol. its good to know the info! right now im trying to do deal on an engine from a guy in laverna or something on craiglist selling an almost complete for 1650, without tranny, sounds too good!! is there a way to start the engine once it's out of its shell.. im hoping for a yes, which i know you cant. wanna know if its not a bad engine.. anyways, i guess so far i can only seem to buy without ending out in the poor house.
ohh, and i did hear about someone installing a little mighty 5.3 on thirdgen.org. i did some research and those little guys are pretty darn cheap! a new engine would go for 3,300$, not bad! im sure they are a dime a dozen in these junkyards.. maybe i might consider, if i can't get my hands on one.
monkihead- nice link, didnt know lq9 had that much potential. it looks like it might be something to look for when all else fails. thanks yo!
i guess i gave myself enough time to take my time to find what im looking for! time.... yeah. better now than never! and man, cant believe the superbowl is around the corner..

You could start it if you had a test stand. Other wise pull a valve cover to check for sludge or other debris, if the intake is off make sure there is nothing down the ports, and try to turn it over by hand with the spark plugs out.
