quick update.. well the guy on the craiglist ad actually went over to my place to drop off the engine. THAT WAS AWESOME! just have to pay him for gas. drove 100 miles. i got more than i bargained for, gave me plenty of goodies and everything. i also got a nice deal on a t-56, it was mysteriously from a 98 as well.. i like the uniformity. right now i am dealing with a guy on selling me his entire brake system from a, guess what.. 98 trans am.. he lives all the way in austin tho.. but i guess its worth the drive! im excited to say that i got lucky an got me everything i need! all i need is a little bit of extra's and be ready for summer! for those of you who is looking into the swap, keep an eye out, i somehow got lucky. patience is was definately worth it for me.

hey everyone. well it seems to figure out that a 98 ls1 is for some reason has its own thing or seperate category of ls1's.. it seems that a TRUE ls1 is from a 99+ model.. not that im complaining.. but i've been looking around ls1.com, and thirdgen.org, and i've been looking for a questioin that has been pondering.. yes i have everything, ecm, wiring, all that jazz. but now i was thinking of replacing the gas tank to a 98. i was wondering if there would be any troubles if i try to upgrade to a 99+ tank.. or should i just get a 2000 corvette fuel filter with the built in reg. also since i have a TBI unit i've upgraded the fuel pump to a 255 LPH from bbk.. will it be ok if i keep my 89 tank and go with the vette regulator and hopefully call it good without going through the trouble of problems along the way..
also i was told that a 98 ecm is not as complicated as the 99+, its wierd how all the wirring and all the help out there is from a 99 up. maybe its more of a ls1 tech Q's.. interesting stuff!!! i'll update if i fugure it out!

also i forgot to mention that only the 97-98 ls1 out there have a METAL fuel tank.. which i didnt know until today. i thought a ls1 came with all the stuff we all read about or "assume" that those 2 un-talked about years go to that category.. well its not!! so all you folks out there who are planning on doing the popular LS1 swap.. make sure you stick to the 99+ models. those years have WAY more stuff to back you up.. but i did notice that some of the sensors like the oil and temp have a in-between tech, like for example i heard the gauges do not rely on the ecm and stuff. im not sure about the proper OHM's for the gas gauge in keeping our stock fuel gauge.. that is yet a mystery or i havent caught up yet. anyways just some things i have been learning from.. and i cant wait for spring break!! gonna pick up my baby and get started!!!

I've been dreaming of an LS1 powered third gen for a long time. Only problem is I'm not handy enough to make one like you are doing. One day when I get the funds, I'll buy one already made. I wish I had the funds now, cause a sweet deal just came up on Thirdgen...http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/firebirds-sale/560484-87-firebird-formula-5-a.html

I don't know where you get your information but 1997 was the first year for the ls1 in the corvette. The 1998 camaro was the first year for the ls1 in the f-bodys. The computer is the 98 is different from others. The 98 is harder to tune, it will not work with the 4l80e due to not having one of the sensor connectors. 1998 was the last year for the steel fuel tank in f-bodys.

heres a quick update. i finally brought my baby up here! i didnt know that rental cars are not suppose to be used to haul things.. you have to go with uhaul to rent a truck and dolley.. too much trouble. but you know i managed to bring it here.
i remove the 305, tranny and swapped a 98 TA rear end in 2 days in el paso. not bad huh!! i brought my camaro with hopes of installing the engine here. all i need is someone to borrow or rent out a cherry picker from someone. a case of beer wouldnt be so bad as payment right?! lol
its crazy about getting the power steering resivoir tank through the dealership. no other auto parts, including napa has that.. guess i have to go to the junk yard and pull me one. or maybe use my old pump.
once i get new gauges, picker, and maybe a tubular K-member from spohn, i can get started on this project on the summer.

You can usually rebuild the power steering pump if the vanes are in good shape. They do sell the pump with the reservoir at some parts stores. We have Carquest, Full Service, Pep Boys and NAPA autoparts that you can also try.
If you want parts slightly cheaper than dealer, I would try Full Service and see what they can do. They carry AC Delco parts that are cheaper than dealer.

well things are a bit slow, car parts are taking a while and managed to order my gauges and picker. i am gonna have to wait until the 14 of this month, cherry pickers are sold out for some reason.. bought mine from summit and got a back order 'till then. i did manage to splurge myself a little and bought me some AWESOME gauges from auto meter, the nexus brand. verry freaken AWESOME!! im happy with them, but they were a but pricey. anyways, just giving a quick update. hopefully i'll get some pics up here on my progress. i did manage to order some parts from HAWKS, and im pleased with their service and their parts.. except the shipping.. 15$ for 5lbs. kinda too much.. but what can we do when things are scarce. im pleased with the e-brake cables i got from them. EXACT fit! since i did do a swap from a ls1 rear, they had some custom cables and fit perfectly! i did had to modify the spring that is attached to the rear drum camle to give me some re-coil and place the cable to its normal position. but i have nothing but good things to say from them! also i've ordered their t-56 crossmember. not bad! also since i bpught the tranny and engine from different sellers,i had to go to this place called alamo bolt andscrews to get me the fastners that mate the tranny and engine together. o also have to get the screws that go with the motor mounts.. gotta find the right lenght. woud i need some washers for the bolts on the tranny? just wondering.. well thats all i gotta report. nothing much has happened besides install my e-brake cables.
lucid- its the actual reservior that is bad all the mechanical part is in good shape. theres this place in 410 that sells stuff like that for cheap. i dont remember the store.. i'll post it up as soon as i can find the paper i wrote it from.

hey guys!! well im happy to say that i got my cherry picker on thurs. and the boxes were TORE UP!! i was worried that i might have lost some parts due to the boxes, they were in horrible shape. you could tell they were taped up and then some more to keep all the parts together.. but i checked everything and the hydraulic worked fine, that was a relief.. so what am i waiting for.. well it looks like i had to go to the dealership to get me some exact fit bolts that mount the tranny and engine together and as well as motor mounts as well.. spent over 30$ for some damn bolts!!! believe that!! and since i was there i went ahead and bought me the busted power steering tank reservoir. this friday i should get my "k" member on friday. then the work should begin! once i get the member i should get to work, i've already installed the throttle cable, regulator, and almost dissasemble the old k-member. just gotta figure out how to send pics in this website so i can put in some pics! but all the good stuff is still on hold until i get my k membr from spohn. it was a nice weekend and would have like to hve more time to work on my baby.. but school and lifer can be extremely demanding. i'll post some pics soon!

Sounds awesome. If you get a cool parts counter guy he will give you the actual bolt sizes and you can go downtown to Fiesta Bolt and buy the bolts really cheap there. I bought some LS1 brake bolts there and they were like $10 a pop from the dealer, I saved a whole bunch buying them there. hey guys. just a quick update on the project.. everything seems to take a while. i managed to tackle all the wiring and figure out what i need to install my new electro speedo and while i was under there.. GUESS WHAT!!! i found out i have 2.. yes.. 2 turnkey ignition switches.. how in the hell is that possible? one of them is in the right location where it needs to be. and the other is under the dash with a key in place all electrically taped like its life depended on it!
WHY would someone do that! i noticed the key has a chip. is that the reason why they riged it to turn the engine over? if you lost one of the keys, would you go through all that trouble to save yourself 20$. i got the biggest freaken question mark in my head..

btw. has anyone done a ls1 swap here? i do have a question for those who know.or are knowledgable.. i know that i do need a master clutch cylinder to accomodate for the new hydraulic systems in the t-56 ls1.. since the new one is about an inch short and my pedals are in good condition. will it work if i switch the shaft that clamps to our pedals in the new clutch cylinder? it was surprisingly simple to dissasemble, but a pain to re-assemble. will i have dissengagement issues or will things be ok? wanted to save myself about 200$ since thats how much a adjustable one costs from willwood via summit goes for.

Definitely post pics of your progress. I know thirdgen.org has a engine swap section with a whole post dedicated to swapping an LS motor in our cars. Sorry I can't be of more assistance.
